Description
My sincerest thanks to Anne Rodkin for allowing me to use one of her marvelous photographs as the inspiration for my fanciful depiction of this barred owl.
The barred owl (Strix varia) is native to North America. It is best known as the hoot owl because of its distinctive call.Other names that it is called include eight hooter, rain owl, wood owl, and striped owl.It has a round head and does not have ear tufts. The adult barred owl is about 16 to 25 inches long with a wingspan of 38 to 49 inches.Barred owls weigh only 1.10 to 2.30 lbs. They are distinguished by the large dark rings around their eyes and horizontal bars on their feathers (chest feathers have vertical markings). They also the only owls with brown eyes. (1)
Owl Medicine
Owl medicine is associated with clairvoyance, astral projection, and
both black and white magic. On several Native American medicine wheels Owl is called Night Eagle, and usually sits in the East, the place of illumination. If you feel drawn to owl - be careful to stay away from any of the dark arts. If Owl is your medicine ,they will appear to you even during the daylight hours because they feel a kinship with you. Owls are very perceptive - knowing and seeing that which others cannot! Owl is the symbol for wisdom in many cultures.
The Greek goddess,Athena carried an owl on her shoulder, revealing truths to her.
People with Owl medicine can be unnerving to be around because they cannot be deceived and may know more about another's inner feelings than they do.Learn to trust your first impressions!
