Description
Changing of the seasons - autumns last stand, crisp leaves crunch underfoot, the last vestiges of color for the year.Flitting little snow flakes bring promises of the winter to come.Bear forages among the leaves preparing for the long winter's nap of lore. Bear is symbolic of introspection. This painting was inspired by a couple of huge maple leaves my granddaughter brought me one day which I used as stamps ,and the birches and oak trees I so love and the bears which sometimes grace our yard.
The eight existing species of bears are widespread, ranging across a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and also partially in the Southern Hemisphere. There are bears on the continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
Modern bears have the common characteristics of large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, short tails, shaggy hair, and plantigrade paws with five non-retractile claws. With the exception of the polar bear which is mostly carnivorous and the giant panda which feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the other six species of bear are omnivorous, having varied diets.
Although they have a heavy build and an awkward gait, bears are excellent climbers and swimmers, and can run fast. Some species of bear forage large amounts of fermented fruits during the autumn months, which affects their behavior. They make use of shelterslike caves and burrows for their dens.During the winter months most bears occupy their dens for a long period of time (up to 100 days). This long winters sleep is similar to hibernation - although the bears do awaken from time to time.
Since prehistoric times bears have been hunted for their meat and fur.Modern bears' existence is being threatened by human the encroachment on their habitats and the illegal trade of bears and bear parts,
Bears play a prominent role in the arts, mythology, and other cultural aspects of various human societies. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear
