Description
A young snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) soars over a clearing in the trees. The young snowy owl is heavily barred and may also be covered with dark spotting. The females of the species also have some barring. Adult males are virtually all white. They have black beaks and talons and yellow eyes, their wingspan ranges from 49-59 inches and they are from 20-28 inches long, weighing from 3.5 to 6.6 pounds.Snowy owls are well adapted to life in the Arctic Circle because of their heavy plummage and white color. However, they range south through Canada and Eurasia, and have even been seen in some of the more southern states of the U.S. - including Texas,Georgia and Tennessee.
During the winter of 2011/2012 thousands of Snowy Owls migrated across many areas of the U.S.
Snowy owls nest in the Arctic tundra, making it's nest on the ground in a raised area like a mound (dune) or boulder - with a good view to search for food and no snow. They lay between 3-11 eggs which hatch within 5 weeks. Both owl parents care for and protect the young. Their diets consist of lemmings and other small rodents and fish which can be skimmed off the surface of the water. The usually sit and wait to see their prey.
The medicine of owl is typically associated with both black and white magic, clairvoyance and astral projection. Those with owl medicine cannot be deceived.Owl is called Night Eagle by some Native Americans. White animals of all sorts are said to be healing totems.
