Description
Bears gathered in the forest, relaxing after stuffing themselves on blueberries and probably honey! "Picnic in the Woods" is a purely imaginary scene inspired by memories of an afternoon spent blueberry picking near my home in the Catskills of New York. I wandered away from everyone (not a smart thing to do) because I spotted a great looking berry patch that didn't look picked over. All of a sudden I heard snuffling and crunching coming from over the ridge - and hightailed it out of there! Luckily there was no confrontation. I love the bears and occasionally seeing them at a distance. I'll imagine them having a picnic!
Bears eat other berries as well as blueberries - raspberries,blackberries,boysenberries... and also eat deer and other animals and fish. During some Native American ceremonies blueberries are put out as an offering to the bear.
