Description
The red shafted flicker is a brown, speckled woodpecker which flashes bright red under the wings and tail when it flies. It has a ringing call and does short bursts of drumming on tree trunks which can be heard in spring almost throughout North America(different varieties) There are two very different-looking varieties of the flicker , the Yellow-shafted Flicker in the east and north, and Red-shafted Flicker in out west . At one time they were considered to be separate species. Wherever their ranges come in contact they do interbreed creating a different color on the wing and tail shafts. There is an area of the western Great Plains where all the flickers are intergrades between the Red-shafted and Yellow-shafted.
The flickers habitat includes open forests, woodlots, groves, towns and semi-open country. They range from Alaska to Nicaragua, living in almost any habitat with trees. The flicker needs some open ground for foraging, so is not likely to be found in dense forest areas, but may be found in very open country with only a few trees.
Flickers eat insects, bugs (an occasional bat) and berries. They frequently forage for bugs on the ground using their slightly curved beak to dig for them.
