Description
Sea urchins or urchins are also sometimes called sea hedgehogs."Urchin" is an old name for the spiny hedgehogs which the sea urchins resemble. Along with their close kin, which include sand dollars, they make up the class Echinoidea of the echinoderm phylum.They are spiny,globular,slow moving little animals whose round shell ranges from 1.2 to 3.9 inches across. which "move by means of hundreds of tiny, transparent, adhesive "tube feet" "Common colors for sea urchins include black and dull shades black and dull shades of green, olive, brown, purple, blue, and red. Their diet consists of mostly algae. Sea urchins are hunted and fed on by sea otters,triggerfish,sea stars,wolf eels, and other predators.The roe from sea urchins is a delicacy in many cuisines. Their dried shells can make lovely decorations.
