Description
I loved the light on the red rocks of this ancient cliff dwellers ruin somewhere in the Sedona area- sorry never labeled the pictures when I took them 20+ years ago! It was incredible to walk the pathways to this area and sit in the chambers looking out over the valley as the old ones had done many ages past in a world far removed from ours.
e cliff dwellers, the Sinaqua Indians (which means with out water in Spanish, are believed by some to be the ancestors of the Hopi .They built many cliff dwellings and lived in the area from 650A.D. til around1400A.D. As the Sinaquans left, Apaches and Yavapi moved in. The Palataki (red house)Ruins were built by the Sinaqua around 1150A.D. It is not known why they mysteriously disappeared around 1300 - perhaps due to warring with other nations or extreme drought. Some petroglyphs or rock art in the area date as far back as12,000 years - way before the Sinaqua inhabited the area.
I visited the area over 20 yrs ago for the first time.It is much more built up now and stricter regulations are in place but it is well worth the time to visit if you can.
