Description
An abstract impression of Turret Arch in Arches National Park,Utah - adapted from a photograph by Robert Bales with his very generous permission.Arches National Park ,4 miles north of Moab,Utah along the Colorado River , is a geological wonderland of balanced rocks, sandstone fins, and eroded monoliths and spires in the area which lie on top of an underground evaporite layer or salt bed - the main cause of the formations.Thousands of feet thick in places, the salt bed was deposited in the Paradox Basin of the Colorado Plateau some 300 million years ago when a sea flowed into the area and eventually evaporated. "Over millions of years, the salt bed was covered with debris eroded from the Uncompahgre Uplift to the northeast. During the Early Jurassic (about 210 Ma) desert conditions prevailed in the region and the vast Navajo Sandstone was deposited. An additional sequence of stream laid and windblown sediments, the Entrada Sandstone (about 140 Ma), was deposited on top of the Navajo. Over 5000 feet (1500 m) of younger sediments were deposited and have been mostly eroded away. Remnants of the cover exist in the area including exposures of the Cretaceous Mancos Shale. The arches of the area are developed mostly within the Entrada formation"
The terrain of Arches National Park appears to be very rugged and durable, but is the exact opposite. The more than 700,000 people who visit the park each year threaten the fragile high desert ecosystem because of its soils low resistance to, and slow recovery from the compressional forces caused by such things as foot traffic. The factors which make Arches National Park so sensitive to visitor impact include the semiarid region, and the unpredictable(and often scarce) amount rainfall,a lack of deep freezing, and lack of plant litter that produce soils that are easily compromised. from wikipedia
