Description
An abstract rendition of the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde done from a photograph by a friend,Ray Braun, with his permission.
Mesa Verde National Park was established as the first national park of its kind in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt to "preserve the works of man".
Mesa Verde means green tableland in Spanish.Mesa Verde was built by the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited the area from 500 AD to 1300 AD.There are over 4700 archaeological sites at Mesa Verde, which include 600 cliff dwellings, as well as many sites on the mesa tops. These ruins are some of the best preserved in North America. The Puebloans only built the cliff houses under the overhanging cliffs during the last 100 yrs that they resided here. They continued to farm on the mesa tops where they had lived prior to constructing the elaborate cliff dwellings. In 1270 they began moving south into Arizona and New Mexico.
