I've always loved seeing the streak of red as the red- winged blackbird darts across a field or from tree to tree. The bright red epaulets or shoulder patches edged with yellow identifies the male of the species (Agelaius phoeniceus) while the female is a more non- descript brown. The red-winged blackbird is a passerine bird of the family Icteridae and is found in most of North America and much of Central America. They breed from Alaska and Newfoundland down to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, and Guatemala, with some isolated groups in western El Salvador, northwestern Honduras, and northwestern Costa Rica. Although they may winter as far north as Pennsylvania and British Columbia, the northern populations of red- winged blackbirds generally migrate south to Mexico and the more southern parts of the US. Their diet consists of insects and seeds.
