Description
Lights dancing across the sky reflected in a woodland pond.
The name Aurora Borealis comes from the Roman word "Aurora" which means "goddess of dawn" and the Greek "Boreas" meaning "North Wind".They are also referred to as the Northern Lights. The Cree call them "Dance of the Spirits".
I saw the aurora borealis years ago in Canada and once while camping. They have fascinated me ever since.
Aurora Borealis is a display of lights created in the atmosphere of the northern hemisphere when highly charged electrons collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the solar wind in the thermosphere. The colors seen depend upon the atoms and their height above the surface of the earth (20 - 200 miles). Collisions with oxygen atoms will produce red and green and with nitrogen, blue and violet. The most commonly seen type is sort of flourescent green. The aurora sometimes appear as just a glow above the horizon and sometimes as an arcing, undulating curtain of lights that seems to fold on itself.
"There was a time when meadow, grove and stream
The earth, and every common sight,
To me did seem
Appareled in celestial light...
The glory and the freshness of the dream..."
Wordsworth from"Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood"
The original is in the permanent art collection of Columbia Greene Community College,Hudson,N.Y.
