Description
The Elf Owl make its home in the regions near the Mexican border. It is the tiniest owl in the world, no bigger than a sparrow. In the late spring ,on moonlight nights their yapping and chuckling calls which are surprisingly loud for the size of these owls - echo among the groves of giant cactus and throughout the lower canyons where they nest in sycamores and large oaks. Their diet consists almost entirely of insects and other invertebrates. When these become harder to find in cold weather they migrate south into Mexico for winter. In the deserts they make their homes in cavities in Saguaro Cactus or in Mesquite . They have rounded heads, short tails,no ear tufts, white eyebrows.
