Description
A whimsical but majestic King of the Elephants done in watercolor in a bright array of colors!
African elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth, being just a bit larger than the Asian elephant.they are distinguished from Asian elephants by their larger ears which are similar in shape to the African continent. The flapping of their ears helps to radiate heat away from their bodies. Elephants love water and will shower themselves with their trunks.Sometimes they will also give themselves a dust bath after spraying themselves. The elephants trunk is not only it's nose but is used for showering, drinking, grabbing things and trumpeting and is made up of over 100,000 different muscles.
Both the male and female African elephants have tusks, which they will use to help remove the bark from trees and dig for water and roots - both a part of their diet. The males also fight using their tusks.
These great beasts get little sleep as they must roam great distances to forage enough food to sustain themselves.
The cows (females) live with and protect the young while the bulls (adult males) tend to roam alone.Unlike the Asian elephants,African elephants are not easily domesticated. In the wild they can live up to 70 yrs. They are very social animals and come together in family groups. They are also very intelligent and communicate in several ways - touch, sight and sound. They use infasound and seismic communication to communicate over long distances. These amazing creatures show signs of self awareness and also empathy for dead and seriously ill elephants. They are the only known species that have significant death rituals aside from man.
Elephants have appeared in art since Paleolithic times, and also appear in many religious beliefs.
This colorful elephant would be wonderful for an office, studio, hallway, family or living room.
Also perfect for a child's room or waiting room.
A delightful gift idea for any elephant lover as a print, totebag or throw pillow!
