Description
My grandson took this photo looking up at the 555 ft tall marble obelisk that is our National Monument. It is the tallest stone structure and obelisk in the world. The National Monument was built as a tribute to George Washington - our first President and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. Construction on the Monument ,designed by Robert Mills, began in 1848 but was halted in 1854 due to the Civil War, and a lack of funding. In 1879 construction began again but the marble was from a different quarry and was a different color ( this change in color is evident at 150 ft ) The monument was finally finished in 1884 by Thomas Casey and the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 1889 an elevator was added.
