Painted Pots And Chili Peppers is purely from my imagination, drawing on the remembered beauty and colors of the desert southwest. Part scenic landscape and part still life it is meant to entice the viewer with the warm colors and designs of the painted #earthenware pottery, the #basket of hot red chili peppers so often used in southwestern cooking and the majesty of the purple mountains and the blazing sunset in the background. Early pottery was made primarily for the storage and preparation of food and to transport water.#Pottery in the four corners area of the #southwest - where Utah,New Mexico,Arizona and Colorado come together dates back to around 700 A.D. In the late 1800's pueblo potters began making pottery for tourists, an art form which they further developed into the 1900'S when it began to be collectible and recognized as an art form. Intricate designs were developed by different pueblos and individuals which became well known and identified each group. The knowledge and tradition of collecting and processing the clay, shaping, smoothing, sanding, decorating and firing the pottery have been passed down through generations.
The prickly pear cactus is a cultural part of Mexican and Mexican-American diets .Most varieties are edible.Only the young cactus are eaten as the older ones are too tough. The leaves or fleshy pads are cooked and eaten as a vegetable, and are sold in stores as Nopalito. The fruit called "tuna" is also eaten and is sold in stores. The flowers which are usually yellow, red or purple are also edible and are added to salads. The cactus range in height from one foot to between six and seven feet tall. Although native to the southwestern deserts of the U.S. and parts of Mexico, the prickly pear have been introduced to area around the world where climatic condition will support them. The prickly pear are also used medicinally for several different conditions.
In 1995 the prickly pear cactus was made the State plant of Texas.
