Description
A still life of some of my favorite glass vases, a crooked wine bottle, dried flowers, a cut crystal candy dish, a candle and a witching ball of beautifully colored hand blown glass.A witching ball is a hand blown glass ball with strands of brightly colored glass inside it.The strands are said to attract evil spirits, trap them and prevent them from escaping.Witching balls are meant to be hung in a window for protection.
Witching balls have been around for more than 600 years, first appearing in England and eventually made their way to America, - New England, in particular in the 18th century. They were hung in cottage windows to ward off evil spirits, bad witches and bad luck. Witch balls actually originated among cultures where witches were good - wise women and healers.they would "enchant" the balls with good to protect the owners against evil.
The gazing balls found in many gardens today derive from the original witch balls but do not necessarily have the glass strands.
