Description
A lonely baby hippo sits in a pool of water waiting for his mama. This painting began as a study of multicolored rocks at one edge of the paper and then I decided to play around with a little rainbow hippo.I liked him so much I decided to continue the rocks around him and have him waiting expectantly for his mama.
Hippopotamuses were called "river horses" by the Greeks because of their love of water and their gracefulness when swimming. They can spend up to 16 hours a day in the water keeping cool. They also bask on the muddy river banks and their skin produces an oily red substance that acts as a sunblock/moisturizer. At dusk they head inland for up to six miles to graze on up to 80 lbs of grasses. They are the third largest mammal after elephants and rhinoceros, and their closest living relatives are surprisingly dolphins and whales. The earliest known fossils of hippopotamus date back 16 million years.
Only one calf is born at a time and only every two years. The mother and baby hippos join up with other hippos as a way of protecting themselves from predators.
Although they are intriguing and can appear even cute they are one of the most aggressive animals in the world and are often considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
This sweet little hippo would love to grace your home or office, perfect for a child's room, study, hallway or family room. Looks wonderful with a white matt in a wood frame or black frame.
