Description
A somewhat surreal impression of a Native American sweat lodge /star lodge.
The lodge is constructed of sapplings tied together and covered with blankets, tarps or hides. Once closed there must not be any visible light inside.
The Grandfathers (rocks) that heat up the sweat lodge are buried within the sacred fire and heated for several hours. They are brought into the lodge one at a time and carefully placed in the center of the lodge. Cool water is sprinkled on the Grandfathers producing intense heat as in a sauna, drumming, prayer and singing are also a major part of the ceremony which is repeated four times (called the four doors for the four directions). It was an incredible experience in my life - many teachings and new friends. No two lodges were ever alike and you never knew what to expect - each person in lodge came away with different impressions of it.
In this painting the top of the lodge appears to have opened up as if you would be able to look up at the heavens - an unusual occurrence I was blessed to experience once.
There are variations on how the lodge is built, the direction it faces - most face the East, and the actual ceremony depending on lodge keepers heritage.
