Description
The Cabins at the Valley of Fire State Park, Overton,Nevada (dedicated in 1935) were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930's out of the Valley of Fire sandstone. They were once used for overnight camping by tourists of the park, but are no longer in use . The sandstone formations seem to glow with rich olors in different lights. A number of movies have had segments filmed using this incredible scenery including "The Professionals", "Star Trek Generations", " Domino" ," Airwolf", "Total Recall " and "The Transformers(2007)". It is also frequently used for cr ommercild and other types of commercial photography.
The name, Valley of Fire is derived from the red sandstone formations that formed 150 million years ago during the age of the dinosaurs .They formed from the great shifting of sand dunes . Today's landscapes were created by the complex uplifting and faulting of the earth's crust the region. Extensive erosion completed the sculpting process of the unique and amazing formations millions flck to see in red rock. There are also formations made up of limestones, shales, and conglomerates. The prehistoric peoples of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later on, the Anasazi . The Anasazi were Pueblo farmers from a nearby fertile area, the Moapa Valley. They inhabitated or moved aroundand though the area from approximately 300 B.C.E. to 1150 C.E. It is thought that their visits probably centered aroung hunting, gathering food and religious ceremonies, but the scarcity of water would probably have limited the length of time they tayed in the area. There are wonderful examples of rock art done by these ancient peoples at several sites within the park.
