The Yellow shafted Flicker or Northern Flicker is a brownish woodpecker that inhabits the east and north ,while the red shafted flicker is in the west.They both flash bright colors under their wings and tail when in flight. It has a ringing call and its short bursts of drumming are heard in spring throughout much North America. The two very different-looking forms -- Yellow-shafted Flicker were once thought of the separate species. They interbreed wherever their ranges come together and . there is a broad zone on the Great Plains where all the flickers are ingrades of the Yellow and Red shafted Flickers.
The flickers habitat includes open forests, woodlots, groves, towns and semi-open country. They range from Alaska to Nicaragua, living in almost any habitat with trees. The flicker needs some open ground for foraging, so is not likely to be found in dense forest areas, but may be found in very open country with only a few trees.
