Description
This painting is purely form my imagination, drawing on the remembered beauty and colors of the desert southwest. The colors and designs of the painted earthenware pottery are meant to entice the viewer.Water flows from one of the vessels into a stone basin.Another of the pieces of pottery is filled with Indian corn.Prickly pear cactus grow among the pots.A string of hot red chili peppers so often used in southwestern cooking hangs on an adobe wall next to a wooden door frame. The doorway is covered by a woven Indian blanket - perhaps this is a cozy little restaurant and cantina and this is the town square and meeting place... And a dusty dirt road leads further into the village and beyond...
Early pottery was made primarily for the storage and preparation of food and to transport water.Pottery in the four corners area of the southwest - where Utah,New Mexico,Arizona and Colorado come together dates back to around 700 A.D. In the late 1800's pueblo potters began making pottery for tourists, an art form which they further developed into the 1900'S when it began to be collectible and recognized as an art form. Intricate designs were developed by different pueblos and individuals which became well known and identified each group. The knowledge and tradition of collecting and processing the clay, shaping, smoothing, sanding, decorating and firing the pottery have been passed down through generations.
The prickly pear cactus is a cultural part of Mexican and Mexican-American diets .Most varieties are edible.Only the young cactus are eaten as the older ones are too tough. The leaves or fleshy pads are cooked and eaten as a vegetable, and are sold in stores as Nopalito. The fruit called "tuna" is also eaten and is sold in stores. The flowers - usually yellow, red or purple - are also edible and are added to salads. The cactus range in height from one foot to between six and seven feet tall. Although native to the southwestern deserts of the U.S. and parts of Mexico, the prickly pear have been introduced to area around the world where climatic condition will support them. The prickly pear are also used medicinally for several different conditions. ... http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-880-PRICKLY%20PEAR%20CACTUS.aspx?activeIngredientId=880&activeIngred

The chili pepper (also chile pepper or chilli pepper, from Nahuatl chīlli ['t͡ʃiːlːi]) is the fruit[1] of plants from the genus Capsicum, members of the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Chili peppers originated in the Americas. After the Columbian Exchange, many cultivars of chili pepper spread across the world, used in both food and medicine.
India is the world's largest producer, consumer and exporter of chili peppers.[3] Among which the city of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh produces 30% of all the chilies produced in India,[4] and the state of Andhra Pradesh contributes to 75% of all the chilli exports from India.Chili peppers have been a part of the human diet in the Americas since at least 7500 BC. There is archaeological evidence at sites located in southwestern Ecuador that chili peppers were domesticated more than 6000 years ago,[6][7] and were one of the first self-pollinating crops cultivated in Central and South America.
Chilies were cultivated around the globe after Columbus.[10][11] Diego lvarez Chanca, a physician on Columbus' second voyage to the West Indies in 1493, brought the first chili peppers to Spain and first wrote about their medicinal effects in 1494.
The spread of chili peppers to Asia was most likely a natural consequence of its introduction to Portuguese traders (Lisbon was a common port of call for Spanish ships sailing to and from the Americas) who, aware of its trade value, would have likely promoted its commerce in the Asian spice trade routes then dominated by Portuguese and Arab traders...

Various kinds of chili peppers are used in the cuisines of countries all over the world.
Capsaicin extracted from chilis is used in a spray as a non-lethal weapon.(pepper spray). Capsaicin also has medicinal uses - it helps relieve arthritis pain, diabetic neuropathy pain and headaches.
Farmers in Africa and South Asia have found the use of chilis effective in crop defense against elephants. The chilis are spread on fences and other structures to keep the elephants away.[citation needed] Because the elephants have a large and sensitive olfactory and nasal system the smell of the chili causes them discomfort and deters them from feeding on the crops. This can lessen dangerous physical confrontation between people and elephants.

This would make a lovely addition to any home.office,or restaurant with a southwestern, modern or rustic decor. It would display nicely in a hallway, dining room, living room, kitchen, family room or study, and would also work well in some bedroom settings.
