Horno (pronounced Awr-no ) or orno (Spanish) is an adobe outdoor oven originally used by early settlers and Native Americans in the western part of the U.S. in Arizona and New Mexico they are still in use in some areas. A horno is basically a wood fired earthen oven usually made of adobe bricks which are covered with a thin plaster of mud. Individual sun-dried mud bricks are bonded together with a mud mortar into what is often a beehive shape. Used by Native Americans and the early settlers of North America. The oven is used for baking and roasting, however other cooking can take place at the opening to the oven. A wooden paddle or peel is used to insert goods to be baked into the oven , then the oor is sealed. Corn can be steamed by ousting the embers with wter then putting the corn in the oven and sealing it. There are instructions for making your own horno on the web.
